Great stars are the ones who last the passage of time and the greatest of their films are the ones that stand head and shoulders above others in that genre, a highpoint for other movies to try and equal. So when it comes to swashbucklers the man to measure yourself against is dear old Errol Flynn and his high point has to be this movie, the greatest adventure romp of all time, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD.

After showing us all what he was made of in Captain Blood (another fab movie) Errol was handed the role of Robin Hood after Warners first choice for the role, James Cagney, dropped out due to one of his many arguments with the top brass. The rest is history, with the amazing Michael Curtiz directing (famous for his use of shadows on walls, look for them in each of his movies) we have perhaps one of the finest casts assembled for such a movie. Olivia De Havilland returns as Errols leading lady, showing us what screen chemistry there is between them, Alan Hale is the ultimate Little John....in one of his many films protraying Errols sidekicks and of course theres Claude Rains with that beautiful voice of his as the devilish prince.

Ok so Errol IS the movie, how could he not be, clearly enjoying the role so much and being the more rounded and talented successor to the first great swashbuckler Douglas Fairbanks, but for me special praise must be heaped on that master of fencing Basil Rathbone as the Sheriff of Nottingham, man that guy could duel...he was famous for being the greatest and deadliest of all the actors when it came to fencing and if the fights were real he wouldnt have lost a single one. So pump up the volume on that first class Max Steiner score and sit back and enjoy a film that will never age.

I admit it, I want to be Errol Flynn, which man wouldnt want to be!
