KONG IS KING! so shouted the publicists in 1933 and who can argue hes as big today as ever, the film certainly is and continues to delight viewers old and young and inspire film makers the way it did over 75 years ago.

Imagine audiences back then, they had seen nothing on this scale, the first major movie to use stop motion animation in such a way, ok you had THE LOST WORLD but this integrated the cast and the main character so more seemlessly and people actually BELIEVED Kong was real. It wasnt considered a kids film, it was an adventure story for adults so NO dumbing down or annoying kid characters for the young folk to relate to (Jurassic Park for example), there was sexuality in spadefulls with Fay Wray and her clinging white outfits or virginity, what a woman!

The story is great, the actors live their roles and unlike many modern actors in such movies treat the film as serious as can be, this was before such fare became part of B-Movie folklore and giant apes, insects etc were considered light hearted popcorn romps. This was a serious tale about taking on nature and losing, transposing a force of nature to the big city. It was exciting, moralistic, absorbing and a damn good romp through a jungle.

If you need to know more about why this film is seminal in cinematic history then consider all the people who have been influenced by it, Ray Harryhausen, the MASTER of stop motion (sinbad, clash of the titans, jason and the argonauts) took up his profession due to this film and him in turn influenced the likes of Lucas, Spielberg and Jackson. All major directors famed for their films of fantasy cite Kong as the work that influenced them beyond any other, without it you can forget about your Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Lord Of The Rings movies, this is where the ball started rolling and its as good today as ever.
