Calamity Jane

Calamity Jane Movie (1953)

The story of Calamity Jane, her saloon, and her romance with Wild Bill Hickok.

Deadwood, Dakota Territory, is largely the abode of men, where Indian scout Calamity Jane is as hard-riding, boastful, and handy with a gun as any; quite an overpowering personality. But the army lieutenant she favors doesn't really appreciate her finer qualities. One of Jane's boasts brings her to Chicago to recruit an actress for the Golden Garter stage. Arrived, the lady in question appears (at first) to be a more feminine rival for the favors of Jane's male friends...including her friendly enemy Wild Bill Hickock.

Ok so MGM might have had Judy Garland but Warners had Doris Day and what a gal she was. She could act, she could sing, she could put a smile on the sourest of faces and men didnt just want to sleep with her they wanted to marry her, you just KNEW she would be the perfect wife and mother.

This has to be her finest moment, a rollicking western Musical which allowed Doris to show herself to be just as adorable as a lovable tomboy character as she was as a lady in a puffed up frock. Ok so she may have taken a lot of her character ideas from Annie Get Your Gun but this film and her performance stand on their own merits with a bunch of songs that get the feet tapping and the audience singing along.

Im an unashamed fan of Miss Days, one of the greats and a woman who despite not making a film for over 40 years still has a huge following even now.

OHHHHHHHH I JUST BLEW IN FROM THE WINDY CITY
