2001: A Space Odyssey Movie (1968)
Humanity finds a mysterious, obviously artificial object buried beneath the Lunar surface and, with the intelligent computer H.A.L. 9000, sets off on a quest.
"2001" is a story of evolution. Sometime in the distant past, someone or something nudged evolution by placing a monolith on Earth (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then enabled humankind to reach the moon's surface, where yet another monolith is found, one that signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers (HAL) and human (Bowman) to reach the monolith placers. The winner will achieve the next step in evolution, whatever that may be.

I love this movie because, for me, it is the most perfect expression of cinema as art. The special type of feeling you get from it and the power that comes from it could exist nowhere else but in a cinematic setting. (Phew! I said a mouthful there!)
I could go on about this film's perfect blend of sound, music and imagery and about how I admire Stanley Kubrick as a true genius of the 20th century, but I won't. I think what sets this film apart from others is the ambition of the subject matter.
I mean it attempts to answer the age old philosophical questions; 'Why are we here? Where did we come from and where are we going?' Yes, the answers it gives might be simplistic, if spectacular, but when's the last time you saw a film that made you think about such questions?
