The Phantom of the Opera Movie (2004)
A young soprano becomes the obsession of a disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opéra House. He kidnaps the soprano and forces the owners of the play to keep her as the lead role of the play.
Begins when an opera ghost terrorizes the cast and crew of the French Opera House while tutoring a chorus girl. He finally drives the lead soprano crazy so she and her friend leave. The girl is able to sing lead one night but the soprano doesn't want her show stolen so she comes back. The ghost demands they keep giving his protégé lead roles. Meanwhile, His pupil falls in love with the Vicomte de Chagny, but the Phantom is in love with Christine, his student. The Phantom is outraged by their love and kidnaps Christine to be his eternal bride. Will Raoul, the Vicomte, be able to stop this dastardly plan?

I LOVED this movie & have literally watched it over 300 times! It is of the pure Gothic Romance genre, which I love. Gerard Butler MADE this movie what it is. He takes you inside of Erics head & pulls you into his emotions. He shows you what a complex person Eric is -- the 2 sides of ALL of us -- the evil as well as the good. It's a sad thing that our society only looks at outside beauty & ostracizes what they consider outward ugliness. Look at what a beautiful soul John Merrick (the "Elephant Man") was. Sometimes the visually ugliest things have the deepest beauty.
I dont usually like musicals but this movie is great! You can feel the passion in Gerard Butlers singing & it has a good story-line. This is one movie that is WAY better than the book!

I have watched each version of this musical opera. This is my favorite of all time movie/film/theater depictions. I luv the paring in this one and it does envelop you into the characters with such emotion. I even own the soundtrack and like to listen when relaxing from a long day.
Ijust luv it and i saw the show in Melbourne fab 
I saw the musical in NY City, it was crazy because the city brought to a standtill (a great blizzard) and I saw the musical in the best place (the theatre was empty). All theatre for me!. The film, obviously, disappointed me :)
I love this movie and the music.
