Chappie

Chappie Movie (2015)

In the near future, crime is patrolled by a mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.

In Johannesburg, the police department reduced the high rating of criminality using robots from the Tetravaal Company, designed by the engineer Deon Wilson. The former military Vincent Moore is envious of Deon, since he has developed another project called Moose, but neither Tetravaal nor the police department is interested. Deon has just developed an Artificial Intelligence but the Tetravaal's CEO Michelle Bradley asks him to abort the project. Deon decides to bring the damaged Robot 22 that was sent to be crushed to test his A.I. However he is kidnapped by the criminals Ninja, Yo-Landi and Amerika that want him to stop the robot cops. When they see the damaged robot in the van, they force Deon to program it to heist banks with them and they call it Chappie. However, Chappie acts like a child and need to be trained to learn and grow. Meanwhile Vincent follows Deon and plots an evil scheme to activate his robot.

Chappie, the robot himself is 100% believable as alive and sentient. It's fascinating how this is achieved, through the design, through Sharlto Copley's brilliant performance, the team of 150 motion capture artists, and through dialogue, action, and support of his 'family' bro Jose Pablo Cantillo, and new found 'parents' Die Antwoord, who get completely absorbed by their robot child. Yolandi Visser and Watkin Tudor Jones play down and out near future versions of their stage personas turned gangsta through deprivation. (The wild look is their own, and they add Zef style to the production design and soundtrack.)
Yolandi telling Chappie a bedtime story in a nursery room is just so charming. There's a mad mix of human soul within the inhuman shell, big life questionis of higher purpose and self sacrifice, and mega-action sequences set within gritty and bloody South African backdrop, thus a visual commentary
on human condition of poverty versus corporate wealth. Each character runs through a story arc and changes through interaction with Chappie.

Best to see this knowing as little as possible, don't read reviews until after as most are
packed with spoilers. Supporting cast: Hugh Jackman, the seething nemesis to Dev Patel,
Chappie's enthusiastic maker, Sigourney Weaver as the commercial interest minded corporate
boss, and Brandon Auret as crazed greed-ridden ultra baddie.
It's a sci fi fairy tale with all the darkness of the bleakest Grimm or Anderson, but
Dickensian reality, District 9 Blomkamp's beautiful storytelling.
My guess is this film will win a place as a slow burner classic, like Bladerunner did before.
