Singles is one of the movies you should take some time to watch if you haven't had the opportunity to do so. Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, the movie tells a casual story of fun and trouble experienced by some newly independent 20 year-olds. Cameron has written other films for young people. He wrote and directed the screenplay for the popular " Fast Times at Ridgemont High", and "Say Anything" which is a touching movie about young people.

The Plot
The film is set amid the music lifestyle of Seattle and a group of sociable, humorous and unmarried young men and women. You'll find Singles funny, smart and engaging as it revolves around the lives of young friends and neighbors looking for happiness, or just love. Despite the fact that Mr. Crowe doesn't bring out any definite problem at the beginning of this movie, the young likeable characters seem to share a single plight. Each of them is facing the difficulty of finding a match, someone they like and who likes them in return. While one side of the equation may usually be right, the other side is often wrong and this is something that many of us, at any age can relate to.

The plot of this movie doesn't move in a particular sequence, so you may find it a little confusing. However, Singles challenges everyone because in your 20s you tend to focus more on seeking your own happy relationships and love life sometimes at the expense of the happiness of others.

Characters
Singles is comic but also thought provoking. The first couple is Kyra Sedgwick and Scott Campbell. While they are more or less suited for each other, they play a dangerous game based on stubbornness and pride. For example, who will call the other? How long will it take before a call is returned? So, while they constantly think about each other, there's a time when failure to return a call means rejection.

The other set of characters that will leave you smiling is a would-be couple. The affair between Matt Dillon and Bridget Fonda seems completely out of place and wrong to say the least. He's a professional drummer in a renowned rock band, which is not a problem. However, he is gradually developing disinterest generally in women and particularly in Fonda.

Bridget does not rate herself highly. She works as a waitress but wants to be an architect. She visits Dillon's apartment and finds several pin ups of busty women. She decides to visit a plastic surgeon in order to look like the women in the pin ups and please Dillon. A funny scene in the film is when they fight over her plan for a new body.

Overall, Singles has likeable characters and you will find yourself smiling all through.
