RV

RV Movie (2006)

Bob Munro and his dysfunctional family rent an RV for a road trip to the Colorado Rockies, where they ultimately have to contend with a bizarre community of campers.

The executive Bob Munro is stressed, feeling threatened of losing his job and his lifestyle, since his abusive boss Todd Mallory hired the Stanford's geek Laird to work in their soda's company. Bob has promised his wife Jamie Munro, his teenage daughter Cassie Munro and his young son Carl Munro to spend vacations in Hawaii, but Todd demands him to prepare a presentation and attend a business meeting with the owners of a family company in a merging operation scheduled in the same period. Bob hides the truth to his family, rents a recreational vehicle and tries to convince his dysfunctional family that a road trip to the Colorado Rocky Mountains would be good to bring old values back to their family. After many incidents and while in the trailers parking area, the rookie Bob is helped by the bizarre but friendly Gornicke family. They escape from the Gornickes and initiate a journey of difficulties and leaning, retrieving their forgotten family bonds.

Fans of Chevy Chase's Vacation movies are in for a treat when they rent the movie RV starring Robin Williams. While this movie doesn't quite pull it off and won't reach the cult-status of Vacation, it is made in the same spirit.

I watched RV from the comfort of a 31-foot motorhome while camping this weekend. The whole family enjoyed seeing our own experiences reflected on the tiny screen. To say it was "art imitating reality" is a bit of a stretch as far as the word "art" is concerned. However, it was worth the price of the movie rental and delivered many a giggle.

Robin Williams plays Bob Munro who must prepare a proposal for work so he won't lose his job but doesn't dare cancel the family's vacation plans. Instead of taking the family to Hawaii as originally planned, he shows up in a huge rental motorhome complete with the words "Rent me" emblazoned on the side. Off they go across country to Boulder, Colorado where Bob must make a presentation.

Throughout the trip, the Murphy's Law comes into play in every way possible. From slapstick silly to downright absurd, you'll find plenty to laugh about. Robin Williams plays Bob Munro without going too over the top as he's been known to do on occasion. The rest of the cast is believable.

While camping at the place where "NASA faked the moon landing", the Munro's meet the Gornicke family, an obnoxious RV full-timer family who loves family sing-alongs and sells musical motorhome horns for a living. Try as they might, they can't rid themselves of the Gornickes.

While my motorhome adventure didn't end with fishing a submerged RV out of a lake, it had its fair share of adventure. Watching RV put it all in perspective and put a smile on my face.
