Dinner at Eight

Dinner at Eight Movie (1933)

Affluent Millicent and Oliver Jordan throw a dinner for a handful of wealthy and/or well-born acquaintances, each of whom has much to reveal.

Millicent Jordan is pre-occupied with the plans she is making for a high-class dinner party. Her husband Oliver is in failing health, and he is also worried because someone is trying to buy up the stock in his shipping business - even his old friend Carlotta wants to sell her stock. Hoping to get help from businessman Dan Packard, he persuades Millicent, against her wishes, to invite Packard and his wife to the dinner. As Oliver's problems get worse, Millicent is increasingly quick-tempered because the plans for the party are not going smoothly. As the time for the dinner approaches, it appears that the hosts and the guests will all have plenty on their minds.

This great American movie is just as fresh and wonderful as it must have been when it was first released.
It is funny, it is touching, and it makes you think. With a story by George S Kaufman and Edna Ferber, and stellar performances by John and Lionel Barrymore, Marie Dressler, Jean Harlow, Wallace Beery and Billie Burke, Dinner at Eight will entertain you, break your heart and inspire you to be a little kinder to the world around you.
While all the performances are brilliant, and the writing perfect, the final scene, as the guests go into the dining room for dinner (at eight), between Marie Dressler and jean Harlow, remains one of the great scenes of all time. Marie Dressler's double-take and delivery of the final line shows this nearly forgotten lady of the theatre and screen to be a performer of immaculate precision.

Dinner at Eight - well worth the investment.
