Gasifier Running a Ford 45kw Generator

Here is a 45kw generator running on wood! This is a Victory gasifier from Seattle WA. The generator is driven by a Ford 300 cubic inch straight six engine that was originally set up to run on natural gas.

For those who do not know how big a 45kw generator is, 45kw means 45,000 watts. You divide by the voltage to get the amps provided. At 220 volts, the generator puts out 240 amps. At 110 volts, it puts out 409 amps. The maximum service provided to most houses is 200 amps.

In an emergency for just keeping freezers and refrigerators running, you could power a whole neighborhood with this generator!

It would take 48 8"x18" oak logs to run the gasifier for 24hrs. A cord of wood 4x4x8 would be about 240 logs, So, you should be able to run the gasifier 24/7 for 5 days on a cord of wood. This is a carburetor set up, so no injectors. The better it's filtered, the cleaner the engine. It's called syngas. Syngas is basically a combination of hydrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide. It would be prudent to have a CO detector in the area. The base of the gasifier is the primary cooler. The gas flows through the tubes and loses heat in the process. The radiator I mounted on the front of the generator is the final cooling phase before combustion and has the typical stopcock valve at the bottom for draining off any water accumulation. This gasifier is designed to run off of wood chunks about the size of your thumb. It will run off of just about any wood, as long as you get the water percentage in the wood way down. The drier the better. Refrain from using heavy sap wood like pine as it taxes the filter too much and pine tar can get past it and gum up the engine. If you plan on using pine, because that's all you have, you'll need to filter, filter, and filter it again to get it clean. Maybe even a few bubblers. To conserve on wood, it would be best to collect several batteries and use the genset to charge them during the day, and use those batteries to light LEDs for light at night. In a SHTF senario, the sound of the genset would drown out the sounds of approaching intruders. Night gives the intruders a lot of protection from detection, and so does sound. It is recommended that the genset only run during daylight hours, because of this. About 4hrs are needed to charge batteries and keep freezers and refrigerators cold. Past that, and you're only burning wood for comfort.
