West Side Story Movie (1961)
Two youngsters from rival New York City gangs fall in love, but tensions between their respective friends build toward tragedy.
West Side Story is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet". The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway - whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what's happened, tragedy strikes and doesn't stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.

Musicals don't get much better than this.
this is just a great musical and what songs absolute classics and unlike many hollywood movies they allowed the tragic ending to remain. A great great musical
I love this musical!!!! The only thing I don't like is the ending, after all this is based off of Romeo and Juliet and doesn't end like Romeo and Juliet. I am a huge fan of Shakespeare and I have to say minus the ending this is a great adaptation made current at its time!
I hate musicals but when i seen this movie in high school it was a great movie indeed. Its about these 2 gangs who fight one another and the sister of a guy who is in the bad gang likes one of the other guys in the good gang called the sharks and they fall in love with one an other. Its kinda like a romeo and juliette type of deal but with songs and stuff in it. I liked this movie is because it had gangsters in it and some action as well. I like to watch gangster movies and action movies.
