The Wizard of Oz Movie (1939)

Dorothy Gale is swept away from a farm in Kansas to a magical land of Oz in a tornado and embarks on a quest with her new friends to see the Wizard who can help her return home in Kansas and help her friends as well.

In this charming film based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.

Another movie from the year considered to be the finest EVER in the history of cinema for classic releases, 1939 and perhaps the best loved and most perennial of family favourites.

Is there anyone who hasn't seen this film and fallen in love with it? can you even recall the first time you saw it..I know I cant because it has been so ingrained in me from such an early age, its as if I was born knowing the plot, the cast, every line of dialogue and song from this amazing masterpiece.

From its dreamlike sepia beginning with its otherworldly feel which soon bursts into glorious technicolour right up until its heart wrenching scenes of returning home it can hold even the smallest of children captivated and has given many a parent some peace and quiet for an hour or two on christmas day.

Judy Garland in a role she was born to play just lives and breathes the role of Dorothy whilst those stalwarts of American vaudeville Lahr, Haley and Bolger use their years of experience to bring the lovable Lion, Tinman and Scarecrow to life. The movie for me though belongs to the late great Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West, man she has to be the ultimate screen villain of all time and has probably been responsible for more kids wetting themselves then coca cola. Seemingly one of the nicest women you could hope to meet in real life this lady created what has to be the ultimate cinematic witch...giving me many sleepless nights as a child (along with that devilish child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!).

A perfect example of a movie where everything is just right and comes together to make a genuine piece of magic, films dont come any better.

All together now..."We'reeeeeeee off to see the Wizardddd, the wonderful Wizard Of Oz"

I must have watched this movie at least a million times when I was a kid. A true classic.

Superb movie. A timeless classic. They should make a documentary on the making of this epic. Imagine how this film would have been if the preferred choices were cast such as Shirley Temple in the lead role and Buddy Ebsen as the Tin Man. There is an updated version of this film incidently called "Tin Man". I saw the trailer for it. It can't surpass the original because it loses it's charming quality if the first.thumbs up
