Relaxed, beautiful, mellow, summery, soulful music with a hint of Nick Drake.
I hadn’t heard of Matt when I came across this album in Our Price at Chesterfield, Derbyshire at the tempting price of £1.99. I thought the sleeve artwork interesting if a little bland but I’m so glad I took a chance on this, it’s a delightful, laid back record and has become a real favourite of mine. Matt went on to work alongside Paul Weller and a three-month stint in Oasis! but I haven’t yet heard any of his solo or Mother Earth albums that appeals as much as 1995’s ‘Villager’ does. Probably difficult to obtain for a while, it’s now been re-released on ‘People Tree’ and had a nice four-star summary in ‘Mojo’ magazine October 2011.
My copy still retains the £13.99 Our Price and £1.99 Sale labels as a reminder of a bargain purchase from a regular haunt which strangely was the final branch trading at the chains demise in 2004.
