I think Eric was always envious of JJ because JJ would never show Eric how he would work his magic in his caravan parked out the back of his place. he would just take a recording retreat into his caravan lock the door and emerge days/weeks later with the finished recording.
Eric owes a lot to JJ. I personally believe that was who Eric picked up his own laid back signature Axe style from,
A lot of the smash hits that enhanced his reputation were JJs originally.

im both fan of jj cale , either clapton too
i recognize here the jj cale influences since album 461 ocen bd where he recorded cocain the jj cale song and made of it a planetarium song
but it wasnt just one more copy of a song but a complete readapt
like he did for call me the breeze or i shot the sheriff from bob marley
or knocking on heavens door from dylan
he completely transform song somewhere and readapt it
aside that since early seventies eric and jj cale were close friends with mutual respect for each other talent
eric was really hurted when jj cale passed away
so please dont put here ur comment that just is not exact
just watch crossroads interviews of all musicians who recognise eric influence in their music bless god
