Here's a song that's a complex musical tale with philosophical portent. So, let's begin an analysis. The song seems to allude to an unknown object that is a means by which a person can pass over "troubled waters...;" i.e., to overcome one's problems or difficulties, but only after being broken, which is suggested by the "Break me beneath the breakers" lyrics in verse three. However, there is also a philosophical treatment of the age old problem of human existential angst throughout the song as exemplified by the line "Save me, my Lord and Savior, Take me though there are no takers" lyrics, which thereby alludes to Christian theology. When considering the song's philosophical message, one can think that there could be, at the least, two parallel arguments offered. One argument, a religious one, has to do with who is to be 'saved' and how it could be accomplished, and the other argument is presented as an overall allusion to a surfer's surfboard almost as if it is a deity, one (a deity) that will be "your surfer girl." Yes, complex!

Written by Terry Scott Taylor, this song is part of his Surfonic Water Revival album released in 1998, which is a great achievement as a tribute to the Surf culture! When thinking about Plumb, one wonders if Taylor wrote this for her at her request, or if he wrote it and then she decided to perform it. Though the lyrics are replete with interwoven meanings and difficult to unwind, I like it because of its complexity! It would be great to see Plumb perform this live. :-)

Note: In verse two, line two, I have a different hearing of what Plumb is singing. Specifically, I hear "Who'll bear a cross through rain and thunder," rather than what all other internet pages that have presented, which is "Who'll bear a cross of nails and lumber?"
