Not too surprisingly, Elastica's lead singer, Justine Frischmann, commented in one interview that she found herself more interested in listening to music than composing it, as the latter was somewhat difficult. I think she probably was the primary contributor to the development of the lyrics for this song, as they seem to reflect her personal challenge or difficulty with just how demanding the crafting of music can be, and how any expectations of band members, and of fans, can place a person in a position of responsibility, i.e, one must create and perform. When certain person-to-person and person-to-society counterproductive dynamics occur, and when existential introspection wells up, these can cause a person to not to want to get out of bed and attack the day. Thus, she revealed a bit about her existence in the music scene through "Waking up and getting up have never been easy," "I can't take the pressure and it's starting to show," and "In my heart, you know how it pains me..." Interestingly, in this song she has expressed something akin to what Jonathan Bree did in his song "You're So Cool," which I've written a bit about, too. I think that Frischmann was Waking Up to realizing that she needed to move in a different direction with her life. Elastica's first album in 1995, by the same name (Elastica), was a hit. About six years later, she quit the London music scene, moved to the U.S., married a scientist, and is now an accomplished fine artist (painting). I thought they were great then and enjoy listening to their songs today!
Here's some info about what she's up to today, which includes a short video. In the video, though she mostly focuses on a short discussion about her art, she reveals just a tiny bit about growing up and living in London.
