I Hate To Say Good-bye

Didn't want to say good-bye.
Loved the way you made me feel.
Hard to let you go.
But I am trying not to cry.
Held you for so long.
Kept you if it was right or wrong.
Hate to say good bye.
I just can't tell a lie.
The way you felt to my touch.
Turned the pages one by one.
I could cheat as such.
But I wouldn't really of won.
To read the end first.
Would extinguish the thirst.
But it wouldn't be the same.
With only me to blame.
I hate to say good-bye.
To an old friend like you.
We've had plenty of time.
But I don't feel as if we're through.
My eyes have grown so tired and weary.
Looking at you.
Soon you'll be replaced.
What am I to do.

About this poem:
I have always been fond of reading. It saddens me watching the good old tactile books being replaced by .........electronic books. There is something about turning that page and the feel of it in my hand I do not want to give up. And that is what this poem is about. Me not wanting to say good-bye to the smell of leather and the wisping sound of a page turning.

i know what you mean. love the feel of books in my hands, reading far into the night. i got a cartridge for my nintendo dsi with 100 classic literature novels on it, but it's so strange to be reading the CLASSICS on a tiny little screen! it feels like an abomination! sadly, we'll all be replaced as well. lovely write to our old friends, HGL, cheers.

no farewell...hello! we're still here and available to be cradled by you. to be cherished and adored the whole day through.... I know what you mean though, as many say, print is dead. but in fact, it's just a vicious rumor, that has often been said. should you find printed page unavailable, but electronics less fitting, come visit my bathroom, for a proper book sitting...(if you can get my daughter out long enough, that is)...nice happy

Hi, Happygolucky4u,
A nice tribute to the printed word. I love the line To read the end first. Would extinguish the thirst. Although I understand the convenience of digital books, I can't image curling up with a Kindle. I, too, would miss the tactile feel of turning the pages forth and back. Unless book printing is supported with our purchasing power, sadly, books will be lost to us.

H.G.L. though I know we all feel a romantic hold to the paper book, and i don't feel it will ever totally leave us. how 'bout this thought. Me, my kids, my neighbors kids, virtually all American kids trudging to the bus stop with a pack bulging and bending them like hurricaned palm trees in the wind, with the weight of all the text books teay HAVE to carry back 'n forth to school, instead of being able to stand upright at the bus stop. Or this, we can use all the pulp we use now, for building stuff, or even just leave the woods where they grow. I think we just need to refine the new way of thought. No one now laments much the loss of the local telephone operator any more, or the job that went with her...we look at the whole issue in a new light. Goog411. It's gonna be ok... ;-)
