I wake by myself in the frost filled dark As daylight empties into stark Scathing sun glints cold relief on life script penned in disbelief.
The lifeless morning treads my way Nowhere to go, no thing to say I turn my face from the unseeing crowd Shrink from relentless celebratory loud
Rumours echo of Christmases full Turn back to real in the silent lull Seeing through windows lives of plenty Move away and return to empty
If on their tree I could hang a dream A thought of hope in an angel's gleam only kind would be what will seem And wishes granted in a happiness beam.

About this poem:
For life's orphans and aliens who do not have family to 'celebrate' with and feel like they have landed on someone else's planet for 2 weeks every year. CJ
You are so right and I can feel it with you CJ....I am all alone here in NZ, because friends are with family, and my family are in the UK. I will try to write you a happy poem about all the men getting the boats out today for fishing, whilst there wives and girfriends check out the sales....and no snow or cold, the sun is shining, the sky is azure blue....perhaps I'm not so badly off after all...I am warm with a wonderful view and peace. your friend Kathy I miss Niah today....
C.J. - you, in your typically eloquent way, show what the corners of the celebrations appear to be, somewhat tattered, a bit forlorn, and on the outside of the glass...just another day. let all men, and women, be granted a beaming happy life. ;-)
"A thought of hope in an angel's gleam" sounds most appealing, Carol, and your poem leaves this glimpse of hope in wishes "granted in a happiness beam". You are always the most reassuring in your comments on my poems. Let me sound the same in mine on yours. "Move away and return to ..." plenty.
The last verse is so compassionate. I wish that too Even though I woke alone in a cold filled room. Soon the house was full of chatter and laughter as the family rolled in. I hope your holiday was a good one.

Hi, caroljoyce, And wishes granted in a happiness beam. What a wish for all - making this not just yet another day!

Spent Christmas by myself the past three years. It's not so bad if you can talk to loved ones on the phone and online. Maybe we should all seek out those who have noone and adopt them for the holidays... Enjoyed the poem, albeit sad...
Take but a moment to welcome someone lonely. Visit them, make some tea, spend some time. It will be priceless to them and will warm your heart as well. We should all remember others in our thoughts, prayers and lives. :) Wonderful words, CJ.
