The Money For Her Diamond

In the heat of July
While bringing in the hay
He gave her a baling wire ring,
And this is what he had to say....

"Someday I'll put a diamond
Here upon your hand
A diamond as pure and perfect
As sure as I'm your man.

But you know, a diamond,
It won't ever shine
As bright or as long
As this love of yours and mine".

So they saved for her diamond
Fixed the tractor and bought a plow
And in the dead of winter,
Paid the vet bill for the cow.

The money for her diamond
Got water to the barn
And paid the increased taxes
The county levied on the farm.

The money for her diamond
Paid the doctor in town
And when their children were all grown
It bought the wedding gowns.

It paid for the new roof
When the big wind came through
Then it paid off the mortgage,
Before it came due.

The money for her diamond
Was always well spent,
She never even asked him
Just where the money went.

The money for her diamond
Helped them to survive,
The money for her diamond
Kept their hopes and dreams alive.

Today it's been fifty-four years
And the diamond is on her hand
But, as usual, in her pocket,
Lies her original wedding band.

A twist of baling wire
Bent and covered up in rust
A symbol of the greatest of loves
His Promise and Her Trust.

About this poem:
This is a true story. My grandparents didn't have much money when they first started their lives together, so he gave her a baling wire ring. She wore it for years. He gave her a diamond ring when they were living and working in Africa after the kids had grown and had families of their own.. He kept his promise to her and she trusted him with all her heart and soul. They had a love that I hope is being emulated today. :)

This is a wonderful love story, ROS. Diamond is just a symbol of wedlock, everlasting love, it comes in many shapes, and it can be a twisted wire too, doesn't matter, borne and cherished the whole life, like in this case. I imagine true love to be like the story unwrapped in this poem. Who could wish for more?! I enjoyed reading this touching poem, thank you very much.

Howdy Everyone cowboy I *LOVE* this emoticon.

This poem is based on the true love story of my maternal grandparents. :) They had met in high school. She a socialite, he the son of a lowly rancher. Never an unlikelier pair you'd ever meet. One look is all it took between them to embark on a life that encompassed my uncle's conception, my grandfather going off to serve his country in WWII, my mother's beginnings, to rodeos, ranch life and working for my great-grandfather. After my uncle and mother grew up, married and had children of their own, my grandparents lived and worked first in Monrovia, Liberia and then in Kenya.

My grandparents eventually made their way back to the US and to their old hometown. They had amassed a collection of things that took up an entire barn on my parents' ranch. They had a love that lasted fifty-four years up until my grandmother's death. I can only hope that my marriage will make that milestone. :)
