Come With Me

Come with me, I invite you
On a ride with no brochure,
A fair piece from the asphalt
Where good men still live the lure.

Of rangeland devoid of fences
Grass rollin' towards the sky,
At day's dusk you might call out,
"Do we have to say goodbye?"

Come with me, and I'll saddle
My own horse for you to ride,
The hours you work with this colt
Just might touch you deep inside.

The hollow saved for secrets
In the heart of every man,
'Cause one long day spent horseback
Feels like sitting in God's hand.

Come with me, we'll go ridin'
And to you I'll swear a vow;
You'll join the men who cowboy
That chose not to follow plow.

Through prairie sod to change it
From open range to furrowed crop,
Past the marrow of their bones
Hear them whisper, "Wish they'd stop".

Come with me, daylight's burnin'
This is not my final ride,
I'll show you country ageless
As the ocean's endless tide.

Then while we're sharin' sunset
With our horses heads down low,
'Bout then you're gonna ask me,
"Do I really have to go?"

I loved this, something really different and well thought out.

Made me want to go somewhere big and wide and wonderful.

I've been writing Cowboy Poetry since I was eight years old. :) Most of my work is in this genre if it has captured your imagination and would like to read more. :) There truly is nothing like riding on open rangeland enjoying all of God's creation. :)

Hi Mary, nice poem. I was watching a doco yesterday on the US. Did you know that barbed wire put an end to the cowboy? It's the birthday of Banjo Paterson here our famous bush poet..."Man From Snowy River" and all that. I think you'd find an affinity there.
Hope recovery is going well. cheers

Hi Mary

These tales of life in the saddle are always an absolute joy to read, you have no peer as a cowhand poetress.

A brilliant write....

I adored "The Man From Snowy River". thumbs up Oh yes, there is definitely an affinity there. :) Believe me, barbed wire did not end the range of the cowboy, just sectioned it a little. We still roam freely. :) Glad you liked this one. hug

I get a bit saddle sore at the end of the day, but a hot bath usually eases it and we're right as rain the next morning.:) My horses have a smooth gait and are easy to sit so saddle soreness is usually forgotten. I bet we'd have a blast riding together. :) hug

Oh, I've seen some poets who are far better than I at some Cowboy Gatherings. I just whittle my work 'til it fits and flows. :) Glad you like this one. :) teddybear

Here in S.W. Oregon we have a radio station (94.7 FM KRRM - Cream of Country) where 'Cowboy Poetry' is a regular part of the programing - Your poems should be here! Love the 'feeling of being there' that your poems accomplish! - I think I just heard a coyote! :-)
