Kingly Hunting
Author: Martha Georg
In vain you fear me, no, it is nothing,
I’m far from being hunter for such game.
I too am so afraid of you, my darling,
I too am game, please try to understand!
This hunting, our kingly hunting, dear,
Will never be successful, no, my friend,
Cause wicked kennel lurking in the rear,
Has always rounded us up of late!
It is in vain that you avoid me, darling,
For I am one who flees, eludes you much,
I may be willing not to part with freedom,
In fear to be caught in net of wasteful love.
If on this earth you’re valued and respected,
You must have enemies - it is a rule of life.
You can’t escape intrigues in palaces of evil,
Who can refuse to stay in favor for a while?!
Oh, our kingly hunting, please believe me,
Is destined to be failure, waste of time!
With constant spite and flattery, and envy
Surrounding us could our love survive?!

Love or hunting...sometimes it is difficult to feel the difference. Since I speak no Russian, I am unable to comment on the translation other than to say the product of your efforts is a most enjoyable read. I suspect that you have done Martha Georg's poem proud!
Tithonus, thank you for your comment. Translation is not so difficult as it seems. To say the truth, it is in a sense much easier, as everything you need in this case is contained in the spirit and imagery of the poem you translate. Much more complex is writing a poem of your own, which needs inspiration and imagination, not always available at a moment's notice. Translation of poets is a refuge which I often seek due to the above reason. I've sought such refuge on several occasions here on PC, and there should be Martha's another poem collecting dust in the files and called "In Cemetery of Love." I would like to read your versified version of Faina Glagoleva's English translation, and would appreciate if you could help me to find it here. No, we don't have any territorial disputes with Armenia and our relations are good-neighborly.
