What will we do when the range is gone When no one is left to carry on; When the hills no longer sing their song, When cowboys are told they don't belong.
When the coyote howls in the past When they say the cowboys will not last; What would we do if the range was gone, Who would be left and who would carry on?
When mother cows and calves disappear When there are no antelope or deer; When springs are dammed and cease to run; Leaving prairie life to bake in the sun.
The cowboys are stewards of these lands They give it life with their weathered hands; It's not their job, it's their way of life, They're married to it, much like a wife.
They'll see to her each and every need And block the path of pillage and greed; We won't worry, the range is not gone, Because there is someone who will carry on.
The brooklets flow, the springs are clear They'll bring new life from year to year; The hills will sing, the coyotes call, The calf will come to it's mother's bawl.
We won't worry about the range being gone Because the cowboys are here to carry on.

All hail the cowboys! A nice write Mary. With your cowboy poems you always make me yearn for that romantic image I dreamt of as a kid...watching all those Westerns. Keep them dogies movin'.
he is right..it brings up the romantic images ..of a cowboy sitting on a horse standing on a hill and overseening the herd or sitting by the fire at night..very lovely write..
Each day I yearn to see what it brings. The life isn't for the faint hearted but the tough of spirit, a "want to" and "get 'er done" attitude. The work is never ceasing but the rewards are so rich. :) We couple all of that with rodeos and ropings, gatherings of family and friends and just togetherness. :) It touches my heart deeply that my works make you yearn for this life and it's promises. :) Glad you liked this work. :)
You are right- it does evoke the lone cowboy overlooking the promise of life before him. :) A good work you may enjoy is "Sermon On The Mount" which discusses this further. :) I'm glad you liked it. :)
