Border Reflections

advantage taken of human need
as desperation laws do break
while US agri-business moves with greed
into the after-NAFTA wake
family fields of decimation
failing grains, lives at stake.

shy-of-heaven cross 8-foot-high
ribbons of discontent in wind blowing
not tall enough to carry all souls’ loss
walled-in people, walled-out hope growing
in the midst of such devastation
wondering just what seeds we’re sowing.

work-permits-limited limits survival, dreams
coyotes traffic in the middle
to feed on human flesh do scheme
free versus fair left to riddle
leaves one with no revelation
trading life for profit its current quibble.

permeable boundary where breath’s air
cut off again leads to plight
full value, full cost, full pockets, despair
from flames of injustice arises Phoenix flight
bold with rainbow-colored feathers, wings elation
as Justice GA 2012 prepares to fight.

where Arizona SB 1070’s fingers of injustice tread
hands join to make love a more powerful deed
diverse societies come with actions to spread
releasing the grip of fear and hate, the need
witness on racial and economic justice, immigration
for reason and love to rule, god speed.

empty hate’s coffers to redeem from sin
let the healing power of knowledge and love begin.

Joy, this sheer brilliance!!! What a powerful and deep presentation of the madness of men toward one another all because of GREED!!! "The LOVE OF MONEY is the root of ALL EVIL!"

You're a well informed woman with a sharp pencil and an even sharper mind!!! bowing

this should be noted very wide it should be passsed on to the congress or legislators just so they know that there is very well educated spoken people that are paying attention of the world that they are trying to shape. with no remorse on the outcome of there actions for there own political agenda

Hi, agoodguy2have, swade777, kickit22, and niah9,
It is such a complex issue and I am still trying to work my way through it. Attended a few workshops exploring immigration issues and wrote this (in rhyme, no less) to help me sift through thoughts on the matter. Much research, discussion and contemplation is still required. I appreciate each of you taking the time to read and comment. Thank you.

Hi GNJ

This is an incredibly powerful statement: But I fear that the bottom line IS the bottom line:

Balance sheets and shareholder's dividends are much more important than trivial issues such as human rights ethical considerations.

I fear the battle is already lost - the Multi-Nationals appear to have unlimited and unfettered powers to do pretty much as they please... we can only stand by and watch with growing anger and frustration.

A great theme...

Hi, Fellsman and jazzy75,
Thank you both for your engaging and encouraging comments - for at least my poem. Fellsman, In the end, "the bottom line IS the bottom line", agreed. The short-term bottom line may, indeed, be money; but, the long-term bottom line, remains quality of life. A healthy society has a healthy quality of life, regardless of the balance sheets & dividends. An unhealthy society, with unbalanced wealth, eventually crumbles. Knowledge and love are critical components of a healthy society.

A briliant read for me, Yes its back to the drawing board for man I reckon. Unfortunatley it will need a world wide disaster to bring man back to the basic of feelings that are more important than anything, I do not get frustrated anymore nothing I can do other than keep my own little world at peace, meaning friends family etc.teddybear

What a meaningful poem. This is the purpose of 'poien'; ~(Greek- poetry-to make)...To make a bridge of understanding, to narrow the gap, to expand consciousness, to offer hope. We are at the tipping point on this planet; unity is the only choice, we must all jump on the turning page.

Your words are music: Such words strike chords in the human heart and ultimately the raise the frequency for us all. Thank you for sharing your Light.

well...you've written a strong piece. quite knowledgable. you certainly are most caring. every campaign in which you enter is fought with great passion and verve. you appear irrepressible. anyone that fights the 'good fight' would be blessed to have you watch their back...

Hi, Redex, starfire_girl, and hedistuff,
You honor my poem with your words. Thank you. Hi, Redex, Although there is much work to be done, I hope that it is not back to the drawing board. In some ways, we have come a long way from the beginning. Perhaps we can build on those successes into a better future. And, for the record, keeping one's own little world at peace is no small matter! Well done! Hi, Leah Candace Z., Many times, I am at a loss as to how to make a positive difference in such matters. That my poem, in some way, may stimulate dialogue about such an important issue as how we treat our brothers and sisters of humanity would please me. Hi, hedistuff, You honor me greatly with your kind words. We all need those who will watch our backs and you strike me as one to do so!
