To Poet
Author: Alexander Pushkin
Oh Poet! Cherish not too much the people’s love.
That fleeting noise of rapturous shouts won’t last;
Fool’s judgment will you hear, throng will laugh,
Stay firm instead and cool, in gloom entranced.
You’re king: you live alone. On road of lore
Walk following your free, unbridled mind,
Perfecting fruits of your beloved thoughts,
Not asking for reward for noble deeds of yours.
Reward - it dwells in you. Yourself – a court supreme,
Can judge your work by strict appraisal of your will,
Are you, severe judge, contented with its worth?
Contented if you are let crowd scold and whip
And spit on altar where your flame is lit,
And shake in childish playfulness your tripod!

About this poem:
A translation of Alexander Pushkin’s “To Poet”. I can’t agree more with the poet: we are the first judges of our own poems, cause we know better what they are about, so don’t wrack your nerves because of others’ critique, which may be biased in most cases, but if critique is constructive better give it a thought.

Are you, severe judge, contented with its worth? Ah, severe, how it cuts to the bone. With sharing poems a most difficult thing, I share little of what I write. Although I cannot judge it worthy, I share, nevertheless, when I can, hoping that someone will find some meaning and/or pleasure therein. Walk following your free, unbridled mind, Perfecting fruits of your beloved thoughts, Pushkin demands. Right now, the muse "has left the building" and so I happily read your lovely offering. Thank you for sharing Pushkin with us!
what words shall he use to express his admiration?
what can a poet say to a lady who lays it all on the line?
that one poet could tell the other....... lady, you're simply divine
so is your advice, your wisdom and most of all the spirit that is being held hostage by your soul...you know how much i respect you, and like the lady before did, i'm not going to repeat all the lines that were laden with wisdom...thanks for being a really good friend despite the fact that people who don't even read me just rail against my comments...i hardly do anymore but when i do i don't kiss a kid's a** who can't write a mary had a little lamb type poem and you people praise him, but i write gut wrenching street poetry about my life which has been long dominated by being a rebel, defying authority, getting arrested and letting my father's high price attourney get grand theft auto down to misdemeanor robbery, no probation, no prison time, just time to write poetry no one will reaD BEcause certain people on this site think i'm arrogant when all i am saying is that they should read more of my poetry because i am a remarkable person, a remarkable poet and a remarkable lover....i've got to be free free to face the life ahead of me........i'd tell you why i just wrote that, but no one does what i ask if i told you so i won't your's in harmony, health, happiness and Harry Hilden who owes me his girlfriend he lost to me in a game of pool in 1996 your fan and friend
FONDLY ~free cee!~
It was a privilege to know him, to see his comments, always witty, encouraging, always rewarding, even when not fully deserved. He was a FRIEND I will miss as long as I live!
Take care.
