On Autumn Winds

Soft autumn winds gently crack some long dried grass
Bending they open from yellowed stalks seeds that outlast
Some more winds crack from open pods and blown from milkweed
Joining upwards go their tufted little silken seed
A wonderful diaspora of promised life set adrifting
Aimlessly into an ocean of air and out of sight lifting
Over so many harvested fields and woods they're tossed
Falling back somewhere stuck fast in frozen grip of frost
High above all the flying V's of countless honking geese
Becoming on the ground quite the conversation piece
Joining many species on journeys beating approaching cold
Completing another chapter in a story too old to be told
Fleeing fast away from the coming winter on a strong wing
Over thermals of rising air to a warmer clime will bring
