Now many hot days and dry earth repeat Lost in a cloud of dust on a dirt road When newly planted crops wilt in sun's heat The spring up in my meadow rarely flowed
When all hard work slows to barely a crawl Even the panting fox gives up his chase Clever rabbit stares like a sawdust doll A little relieved for some breathing space
Then a cool breeze blows from the north-northwest Gathering clouds rise in darkening dusk A hawk circles three times around its nest Long awaited raindrops appear so brusque
For the drought would end after a fortnight Much do farmers dance with giddy delight

About this poem:
Reflecting on those anxious days when the new emerging plants are so tender so early in the growing season and watching the sky for clouds...and all the abundent wildlife for signs.....of sweet summer rain.....
What about that smell released when the rain drops hit the dust and mmmmm summer rain smell... one of the nicest smells on the planet and they never bottled it! Cool poem sir yankee
ps (by the way saw your comment somewhere where you said you didn't like empty praise and you thought your poetry wasn't all that? well, for my two cent, I've never made an empty comment on your poems, I meant everything I said and tend to say nothing if I've nothing really to say. You are one of the poets that I always expect more from because your own standard is high - thanks for that yankee.)

Nice picture inwords you paint of Sweet Summer Rain, and I do mean this, not just empty praise as you state,I love poetry of Nature and I love reading them.Thank you and please understand that what I comment Is genuine. To your poem
Hi, Yankee4you, Having just returned from a trip to the Southwest where only wildfires rained in the heat and its associated dryness, I sit now and listen to the sound of summer's rain dropping outside my window and give thanks for it and for your lovely sonnet.
LadyB... I meant to say how gracious I feel for some uplifting comments when I don't exactly think some of my stuff is all that inspiring. I suppose it's akin to critiquing your own photo...I never .ever' take a good pic...hahaha I do enjoy the Poet's Corner immensely...even more when I don't take my talant too seriously......it is just fun to write, read, and share poetry.
Ho joy.....Oh it can stop raining now....haha....last week I was hand watering my over 225 tomato plants and 100's more peppers and cukes.....just to keep the poor little huys from shriviling to dust...and now...after 11 straight with nary a drop....we've had a steady downpour for two days much to my great delight and sore arms from carrying water pails.....
Odette.... There is something very life giving about rain....I know it cleanses the sky of fine paritculate matter and likewise freshens the air...but perhaps also freshens the mind from the dust of haze and dullness....certainly perks me up....
