The Marmite Effect
“Love It or Hate It"
Brewer’s yeast, fermented
sugars into alcohol
before 1680 discarded
then, with salt added
hypertonic, broken down
now, loved or hated by all
concentrated, packaged
by Liebig for people to eat
as small earthenware pot
stores this hearty breakfast treat
with dark secrets blended
to whet morning’s appetite
from UK via Sanitarium
New Zealand transformed, thick
black, savoury, potassium-rich, too
sugar, caramel, added to enhance
bringing its weaker, less
tangy taste from NZ to you.
then, gutted by fire in ’66
now, earthquake-shaken
damaged processing plant
threatened as morning’s staple
rises to NZ$100 per jar
twenty times usual price
distilling to culinary sacrifice.
Warm-toast advice given
to make it go farther
savoury vita-spread with ease
on hot buttered crumpets
Avert panic, focus to store
Yeast extract rises to please
icon should remain
if brand can sustain
taste in minds, as stock
from shelves away does fly
Marmite Squeeze Me
should…will, to you, make its way
by July, if Paddington Bear
has anything to say.

About this poem:
Wrote this back in March when I read about the Marmite shortage.
So, has it made it back onto the shelves?

Now being an Australian I have to comment on this. Marmite is made from brewers yeast. We have a national delicacy here called vegemite. Australians travel the world with it. It's brewer's yeast with some veggies thrown in. Full of vitamin B, fabulous for hangovers. Apparently the history of the product was that marmite was originally made in England and during WW 1, there were shortages here in Australia. So local entrepreneurs decided to create their own version. They called it Parwill.....l get it...Ma might...Pa will! It didn't take off. Anyway they then called it Vegemite and it is now ingrained in the lexicon of our language. No other food product is more Australian. Hope you appreciate my history lesson and thanks very much for your poem.
When I read about the earthquake-induced shortage and the concern over brand loyalty's shelf life, I was intrigued by the "out of sight, out of mind" concept behind the then-current marketing strategy. That poem never materialized but The Marmite Effect did. Thank you for taking the time to leave your delightful comments on my poem. They are deliciously entertaining, including the Vegemite history lesson, and most appreciated!
P.S.
Initially, I heard about it on NPR. Intrigued, I Googled and read more. I'm glad you enjoyed the link and took the time to comment on my poem. I'll have to wait until the price returns to normal to give it a "love it or hate it" try!
Thank you for your kind comment on my poem. It's good to know it is an acquired taste! I guess a taste test is in order.

Oh the war of the Mites!
