The Preacher and I...
It was a very heavyhearted moment under the Texas sky that day,
There we stood, shoulder to shoulder, the Preacher and I, next to my granddaughter's grave,
Two exhausted middle-aged men,
All the tears had already spilled out of us, there were no more for the moment,
We had just finished burying my beloved granddaughter,
A special angel, gone back whence she came from,
Why? Why? Why?
I have no clue...
I saw the Preacher’s tired gaze gravitate towards two men,
One bespectacled and very malevolent-looking, the other wearing a black patch on his one eye, like the pirates of old,
and, suddenly, I knew exactly what he was going to say:-
‘P...’, he said to me, in a very loving, warm and brotherly manner,
‘Today is one day that the control-freak[referring to the malevolent character who had married my ex-wife]surely cannot control, eh?’
‘Yes Sir’, said I, ‘...surely not...’,
‘Difficult to imagine they came out of the same womb, eh? One an evil fiend, the other just an ordinary, even likeable kind of guy...’ intoned the Preacher rather uncharacteristically about the afore-said duo,
And we both chuckled,
Our shoulders bobbing up and down like two sad clowns, as they communed ruefully that sorrowful day, releasing phenomenal pent-up energy that would have harmed us significantly if the wise and sympathetic universe had not engineered the release for the benefit of the Preacher and I...

...beloved granddaughter, A special angel, gone back whence she came from, Why? Why? Why? I have no clue... -- Nor do I. It is times such as these that one can only say, My heart goes out to you and your family. May the love for your granddaughter spread itself as a healing balm throughout your being as you journey with this great loss to where fond memories await. In deepest sympathy.
I really do not know how to respond: You describe those harrowing events in your own inimitable, gentle and understated way. You are the finest of human beings and an example to us all.
I won't trouble you further with predictable homilies and expressions of sympathy - but I know the pain you bear will not change you as a person... I simply wish that I was more like you.
My kindest regards
Bill (And I'm not usually in the business of sending hugs to other men!)

thanks for your gracious comments dear Massachusetts, this happened some years ago now, so, although total healing does not occur they say, we're making headway...

Your gracious comments leave me speechless dear Bill, many thanks, and for the hugs as well...
Someone once said about the tragedies of life that you either laugh or you cry. You seem to have embodied both elements in this very powerfully written piece.
