The Ancient Tree

The Ancient Tree

BY linda hillier on January 26, 2011 the ancient tree

the ancient tree stood in the clearing

majestic in its full leafed beauty

its old branches reaching up to the sky

roots stretching deep down into the earth

what different things it had seen

during the time it had stood

witnessing many a battle

even a murder or two

the secrets it could tell

Of the foolhardiness of mankind

600 years it had stood sentry

over all it surveyed

now still majestic but slowly dying

it would take all it knew to the grave

Hi Linda, I find this story enchanting "The Ancient Tree", it reminds me in a way like my "The Haunted House" poem, like a tree an old house sees many generations of people and it has a special meaning for me, I remember travelling in the country and there was a tree which had a sign next to it, it belonged to a chain store of the time Anthony Horderns, an Australian company, on the sign it said "While we live we grow", sadly the company faded into oblivion and that wonderful tree was cut down, so in some way it reflected your story, it is a good write, and I feel you have many more poems to create, you have around 45 poems here and I have 39 so I have a few to catch up with you, your work is excellent and I look forward to reading more, all the best. TY John I have always liked this one. Trees are such majestic things and essential to our planet I am always humbled when I see an ancient tree how they must laugh at silly mortals tyteddybear bouquet

Deep and very starkly true my dear Linda. Trees do live longer than man and they do their thing as we do ours. We learn from them as much as we enjoy their being as they are. My love once wrote: RESILIENCE AND ENDURANCE, these trees, have more than human. How true. All the brutal disaster, they have to go trough and never complain? What a write my dear.

God Bless you.

I like this shadow,
how often we think 'if these walls could talk'
as opposed to 'if the tree could ..'

I enjoyed. Ty flower
