Ode to an Upright Vacuum

For years you sucked and sucked
And sucked,
And you were goddam good at it, and it seemed
That you'd go on sucking forever.
You sucked enthusiastically, your bags filling
Just as quickly as mine emptied, each time
I turned you on.
But one day you just stopped;
I never asked why.
I placed you by the curb this morning,
Just an inoperable, suctionless shell,
Still full of dust and semen.
