You float and soar the skies riding the winds thermals vast oceans you travel majestic and mysterious
thought by mariners of old to be a harbinger of death the sight of you a sign of doom a bird bringing ill fate
how could anything so beautiful have earned such ill repute yet mariners feared you the most and signed themselves with the cross
for me the sight gladdens my very soul as you silently glide above your wings dazzling white in the sun truly you are a Spirit Bird

About this poem:
my favourite piece of music has always been Fleetwood Mac's Albatross it is so hauntingly beautiful It sends me every time I listen to it. Its one of the pieces of music I have told my family I want played when my time comes
Nice write Linda and hopefully Fleetwood Mac will not be played for a long time to come....Ken

A kiwi poet from Kaikohe in Northland wrote a poem about Albatross, and this one as yours is so sad.... because it gets shot, and dies enroute it points to human attitude towards a bird..... We had to pick a poem for our finals, to break down and critique, and I picked this one because he was a local poet, but because it spoke to me. It was a poem I learnt caused lots of problems throughout the poets later life. I have it on my old laptop memory from my finals....I will try and locate it for you...it is mind blowing. Kathy

Hi Linda
I'm sure reading this that you must have read Coleridge's iconic poem The Ryme of the Ancient Mariner. When I was stationed at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus during the early seventies, Fleetwood Mac's Albatross was the closing number every night on the base's radio station. It is a hauntingly beautiful tune.
A fine poem...

'truly you are a Spirit Bird'..Mariners may have reagrded them as omens, yet some indigenous people made Totems of them. TY 4 sharing.
