Wisdom and Knowledge

a cup may contain water
but it is not the water

words may point to the truth
but they are not the truth

form may express the essence
but it is not the essence

knowledge may lead to wisdom
but it is not wisdom

having knowledge is being intellectual
having wisdom is being intelligent

knowledge deals with the parts
wisdom deals with the whole

the whole is more than the sum of the parts
wisdom is more than knowledge

Hello ladyjewel
Thanks for your comment!

I think that most people are of the view that there is a difference between wisdom and knowledge. In this piece, I have attempted to express the difference the way I see it. This is stated in the last two lines. I welcome any comments on it.

Hi tinyfangs
Thanks for your comment. I am glad that you like the piece.

The search for truth is the major goal of philosophy. I do not think that any set of words can "capture" truth but they may be helpful in pointing to it as you have said.

wisdom and knowledge are indeed 2 separate things ...

one may have knowledge ,,, but life experiences provide much wisdom and on occasion can enhance it .

Wonderful thought provoking writing Socrates

Hi Serenity
Thanks for your comment!

As you may have observed, besides my pieces on Nature, I have also posted a few on philosophical themes such as this piece. For me, Nature and Philosophy go together.

Your statement "one may have knowledge,,,but life experiences provide much wisdom and on occasion can enhance it" is brilliant.

Some people confuse being intellectual(knowledge) with being intelligent(wisdom). I have inserted the 9th and 10th lines to show this distinction. The following link gives an interesting article on intellectualism and intelligence:

Best Wishes to you as always!
