glassy-eyed people moving as in a dream looking without seeing seeing without looking
utter hopelessness pervading their souls filling them with despair and pessimism
lustreless eyes no inner joy just a deep emptiness stifling their souls
dried-up people shutting others out shutting themselves in lost in their loneliness

About this poem:
The initial title I gave this piece was "Soulessness" which refers to a lack of sensitivity or the capacity for deep feeling. It focuses on deep emptiness which stifles the soul. This may be the outcome of factors other than loneliness. I am re-titling it "Faces of Emptiness".
All I honestly feel right now is a deep sense of compassion for all in that experience; your poetic description is a strong one socrates. thanks for sharing

socrates44,
I am in awe of your talent for verbally expressing much of 'life' as it exists in todays world.
It is bad enough to gaze into the expressionless eyes of adults ~ who for a multiude of reasons ~ have ceased to feel. For some it is lonliness; for others it might be pain; and for many it most likely is drugs.
That is terrible. But to look into the eyes of children ~ many very young ~ and see blank expressions on their young faces is a travesty. They are not here. That freightening look of emptiness refected in their eyes is like gazing into the depths of hell.
I so glad that someone brought this poem back. Thank you for sharing.

This is one of the few pieces of dark poetry that I have written. Sad to say, but it is the stark reality faced by some persons today. Your reference to young children is most tragic:
"That frightening look of emptiness reflected in their eyes is like gazing into the depths of hell."

Your poem says so much of what I feel about the world and its people in recent years and I despair that I have ignored reading or listening to insightful meaningful items that are out there. . ... not really, just avoided the issue.
After spending 5 weeks away where a poetry reading was obligatory every night it is not easy to sit back with what has been eye-opening on that front on my return.
