my back pages

I remember all the days we had
for laughing in the sun
you would do such crazy things
which gave us so much fun
the times that you pursed up your lips
and you squinted your eyebrows
oh, but we were so much closer then
you're further than that now
when we first met I heard you say
that you liked me quite a lot
and in time, you grew on me
I let myself get caught
we often danced the night away
but still we stood somehow
oh, but we were so much closer then
you’re further than that now
our time spent together
was the only time we had
even though I loved to tease
you never would get mad
when you turned your love to me
all I could say was wow
oh, but we were so much closer then
you’re further than that now
til one day, an old flame
turned up at our place
that led to your confusion
you slapped me in my face
when you said goodbye, I knew
there’d be no marriage vow
oh, but we were so much closer then
you’re further than that now

Nice reflections, even if you did get a slap at the end!
