Father's Eyes

Their light lost many years ago
Faded like color from a dry stone
Once radiant in their wet sheen
Deeply whorled and green
Like a lost emerald
Fallen from its golden clasp
Left a jagged and twisted claw
Emptiness in its grasp
I search for you in vain
Across the many paths
Where life has taken me
Wandering eyes gazing down
Across the uneven ground
Into every tiny crevice
Still waiting to discover
What is missing from my crown
