Honesty is the best policy That's a lesson I was taught at school But today in a world of trickery Is that merely advice for a fool?
One time a person's word was his bond A handshake was used to seal a deal Today, no oath can be relied on For some are always trying to steal
I shall be honest in my action For to myself I have to be true In each and every situation No matter what others say or do
Peace of mind is most important to me That's why I shall always strive to be free To act in all truth and sincerity For honesty is the best policy

About this poem:
I tried to write this poem in the style of some poems I learned and loved as a child. I have a special fondness for balanced rhyming poems. I think they are easier for children to learn. I believe it is important for children to learn the importance of honesty and I dedicate this poem to them.

Wonderful poem, Socrates! The message, the rhyme - and it's so true, as noted in the About this poem of being easy to memorize... and most children love rhyme(as do many adults)...
Hmm... great idea you've given me, too - a more pleasant way to teach various things - whether to children in Sunday School(though I'm not a teacher right now), young relatives, other children in my life...
Great poem(and one to teach) along with a great inspired idea!
Honesty is what I strive for too Socrates..I guess it's just me trying to be at peace with myself as you said....enjoyed this... It's light and the message is easy to absorb.

Lovely message in this one for our future adults Socrates, Some present day ones could do with reading it also.
Good write..........Mick.

A beautiful message for all big and small. We get people who put on the show of honesty but when the veneer is scratched the truth is revealed of who and what they really are.Loved this write of your.Wealth and good looks are not everything that makes up ones life its peace gained through honesty and kindness.Thank you.
Hi, socrates44, Honesty is the best policy...Is that merely advice for a fool?, the poet asks. For some, thankfully, it is the only policy To act in all truth and sincerity. May it continue to be so and their numbers grow. Thanks for sharing.

Cat This is a very special poem to me. I enjoyed the balanced rhyming. I recall, as a child at school, the class would be asked to repeat the lines of a rhyming poem after the teacher. Inevitably, we would break out into a sing-song, with a harmonious melody. The teacher would get mad at us, telling us to stop the sing-song and articulate and speak the lines clearly. Then we would go into a dull dry repetition. It took the fun out of learning the poem. I think that children are natural harmonious vocalizers and can easily create a rhythm in vocalization. This is especially so in Nursery Rhymes. Personally, I think the sing-song should be encouraged, especially with young children, since it makes the learning exercise fun and helps them to remember the poem. Have a nice day!

oriental I remember the statement "Honesty is the best policy" was posted on a wall of my classroom. It was only later that I came to realize that this is the key to "peace of mind". Thanks for your comment! Have a lovely day!
