Marriage II part 2

after this weirdo wedding took place
(words of the preacher still fresh in my head)
went off to find lodging for the night
found the "Treetop Inn" could provide us bed

our wedding night, overlooking the interstate
didn't really matter, we watched the sun rise
I guess we did things that most would and would not do
but next day, boy, was I in for a surprise

come morn' we traveled a side road following Dismal Creek
we were to visit my new wife's cousin James
incarcerated in a Virginia State Prison
Bland Correctional Institute was it's name

he had killed a nun and had crippled another
driving drunk late one night on the interstate
thought he was heading west, but was in the east lane
when he hit them head on, thus sealing his fate

James plead guilty at his trial
he testified that he drank too many beers
no one rushed to his defense
the judge sentenced him to seven to ten years

so me in shorts, tennis shoes, and white tee shirt
and my new wife in her frilly bright frock
went to see her cousin, in jail for four years
when we arrived, I was in for a shock

apparently they had a dress code, shorts were not allowed
I was issued a gray prison pant, into which I quickly changed
in the visitors area, I fit into the crowd
(praying that a heads up to the guards about me had been arranged
'cause all the cons had shirts of white with trousers of gray
was sitting there sweatin' bullets, what more can I say?)

so I got to meet her cousin James (sweet and repentful)
and yes, I was allowed to leave when we got up to go
it was an experience that I'd just as soon forget
(so why the sam hill did I bring it up for you to know?)

many years later, after his parole, I saw James again
in spite of earlier declarations, he had returned to old ways
drunken, beligerant, hateful, and mean, would only take time
til he would spend more prison time to study the error of his days

well....I gave my wife her blue eyed girl
that she had wanted so badly
for a couple years life was awhirl
then we began acting madly
our love was done
our time was over
....................

Some honeymoon, huh?

ha! probably would have felt that way then. now, that blue-eyed daughter is 19, lives with me and my latest wife (or is that newest?), attends college, and perhaps...who knows...maybe dreams do come true.
