The Hummingbird

Incredibly fast and yet so tiny
Dressed in feathers that refract the sunlight
Radiating such colourful beauty
Producing a true birdwatcher's delight

Suspending a living feathery mass
Wings beating at eighty times per second
Create a blur which for a short time lasts
Then in an instant later it is gone

Busily sipping each flower's nectar
As you rapidly flit from bloom to bloom
Viewing you in your glorious splendour
Chases away any feelings of gloom

A true master of acrobatic flight
Forward, backward and even upside down
What a marvellous captivating sight
Leaving the viewer speechless and spellbound

All bedecked in luminescent feathers
Blessed with a spectacular flying mode
Radiating such beautiful colours
That is the magic of the hummingbird

About this poem:
Trinidad, my native island, is sometimes referred to as the “Land of the Hummingbird” because more than sixteen different species of hummingbird have been recorded on the island.
The indigenous Native Americans, the Arawaks, named the island, "Iere", which, in their language, means "Land of the Hummingbird".
Two hummingbirds are shown on the island's coat of arms.

I love, love, love Hummingbirds. I use to feed them sugar water. The only reason I gave up is because the problems with bees. I hung the feeder from our porch and had lots of flowers in the flower boxes. Bad combination for bees and ants - not on my porch please. They both love the sugar water. So I just content myself in seeing a stray Hummingbird light on my flowers. I try to plant flowers that attract them. I have a hanging Mandevilla on my porch and a flower bed along the sidewalk. Thank you Socrates for my nature fix this morning! purple heart teddybear

Socrates.wave .Just an amazing little gift...hummingbirds.heart wings Thank you for posting this lovely poem and video...they are such interesting birds to watch at the feeders! Not exactly willing to share are they,lol...they are busy chasing off the others from what they consider "their" feeder! We have tried holding the feeder while sitting in lawn chair...sure enough they would continue to come to feeder and even lit on our hands as we held their food....just a delight to observe up close or from any distance! thumbs up

Thanks for your comment.
As a child, I grew up enthralled by these fascinating tiny birds in my native land of Trinidad which is called the land of the Hummingbird.
I simply tried to express some of that fascination in this piece.
Have a wonderful day!
