I was absent, the day you left me just like so many times before so at the time, I didn't miss you I never heard the closing door you left a message, that you had gone away
I never noticed you weren't there as if I didn't have a care never noticed you weren't there til found the note left on the stair I broke down and cried "don't leave me this way"
but it was far too late for tears there was nothing I could say forced to face my fears for now you've gone away so, curled into a ball, upon that stair now, much too late...I had a care
Hi, hedidstuff, Although I infer from never noticed...never noticed that it wasn't the leaving but the manner of leaving that caused the narrator to have a care, sometimes one does not "know what you've got until you lose it". Thanks for sharing.

yes, never noticed...in whatever regard, some more specific and cardinal....
