Australia: Race Relations

I think of the Aborigine's last plight
To tell of the Rainbow Serpent* in its might
Wherein the ancient dream time lies your soul
And the strength of ancient myth becomes your all.

For my young country Australia -
I tell of my dismay and love for her
I sing my all and in my praise for you
Hear the ancient haunting rhythm of didgeridoo.

Generations old and lost in time
Rock paintings in the Kimberley sublime
Dot paintings are the desert's oldest art
The living Dreamtime spirit at its heart.

One day they'll be when black and white unite
To recognize the black man in his fight
To seek the white man's peace in destiny
We must first make peace with the Aborigine.

To put the Constitution right now in its laws
To love the black man instead of to abhor
And to the Stolen Generation, a treaty give
Will make our country stronger - live and let live.

To lift the black man up with helping hand
Like Gough Whitlam ** unto you did pour his sand***
From white to black we still have far to go
From black to white forgiveness we must know.

About this poem:
* The main deity in Aboriginal mythology
** 21st Prime Minister of Australia (1972 - 1975)
*** A symbolic gesture giving the Aboriginal people "back" their land
and the start of the modern "land rights" movement

**** I wish to acknowledge, and pay my respects, to the traditional custodians, of this land, the Aboriginals. I also pay my respects, to Aboriginal Elders, past, present, and emerging.

Hello, I'm so pleased to be the first to comment on this powerful poem, how it is beyond the wit of man to respect each other is beyond comprehension, and writing and the voice such as yours is a small step forward, but the longest journey starts with a single step, congratulations, Phil.

Phil - much progress has been made since this symbolic gesture, and I am just about old enough to remember most of it. However as I have said in the poem we still have far to go. How can we move on in today's World without tolerance and understanding? Are we to be for ever mired in hatred and misunderstanding between the races? It is the same in all counties, as you know. As we rapidly enter a mind blowing age of information transfer, surely we must attain more respect and tolerance for each other based on this information that we share about each other? well we can only hope. Thanks very much for your comment.

We have a peaceful country over here too, it's called Canada. We here in the states are doing a really bad job at this. It seems the ones in power want us to hate each other because a divided people are easier to control. The government has a huge influence on how the Indians are treated. The richest county is right next to Washington D.C. The poorest sits right by the badlands in South Dakota. It is an Indian reservation.doh

A very powerful poem which makes you stop and think about the reality of what is happening even in Europe......this hatred and lack of respect that some people have towards others just because of different skin colours or social backgrounds is horrible and unacceptable. Thank you for sharing as it does leave a positive impact that there are people who still care about the plight of others! :)

We have made a lot of progress. More needs to be done in terms of access to medical care, inclusiveness, social justice, and education - particularly in the more remote areas....thanks for your comment...

I know this is not your favorite subject - but the Rainbow symbolizes God's covenant to His people after the Great Flood. God/Jesus did not show favoritism of color or race. In fact we may all descend from Noah after the "Great Flood" according to the Bible. Supposedly there was no one else left on Earth. Please note the following reading:

People Of Color In The Bible
(Part 3 -Cyrene)
by Rev. Robert Ash

"Cyrene is the African country where Simon of Cyrene came from, that blessed brother who helped the Lord Jesus bear His cross up to Mount Calvary (Mt 27:32). Simon and his people were descendants of Put (Phut), the third son of Ham, the ancestral father of Africans. Ham was Noah's youngest son (see Gen. 9:19, 10:1-20)."

Just food for thought! angel grin

Aboriginal settlement/culture in Australia has been proven to be at least 40,000 years old; and according to some experts, possibly even 60,000 years old. This occurred a long, long time before what you speak of. In evolutionary terms, however, they did originate in Africa, as did all of mankind's (that is to say our) hominid relatives.

You are of course entitled to your beliefs, and thanks, anyway, for your comment...

Also the Aboriginal Rainbow Serpent (deity), has nothing whatsoever, to do with any symbolism Christians may attach to the Rainbow; in fact the two things are entirely and completely separate. As I said above, Kathy you are fully entitled to you beliefs, and once again, I thank you for your comment...

TRUTH. Thanks.
