THE TURTLE

Driving along the road yesterday
Up ahead were flashing hazard lights
I slowed down on approaching the fray
Until I could get in full sight

Wondering if something bad was ahead
One man was getting out of his car
I approached cautiously with much dread
He was staring at the hot blacktop tar

I too looked to see what was there
And started to laugh at the sight that I saw
Trudging down the road without a care
I watched this huge turtle in awe

He kept walking with determination
Not to let anything stop him
From reaching his final destination
Did he know his chances were very grim

I drove on praying in my heart
That God’s creature would be safe in his travels
Wishing that we humans were that smart
To trust God when our life starts to unravel

Knowing that He is watching over us
And He will help us to get where we are going
Without all the fuss and muss
But with complete faith and knowing

About this poem:
Yesterday driving home this really happened. Wish you could have seen him/her and if a turtle can have a determined ignoring concentrating look on its face - that turtle did! lol

Hi Kathy, good to see you posting. This poem reminds me of a time I was (with my ex) down near a place called Young (Central West NSW - Australia) around about 2011. We were on a kind of road trip, at the time, staying at different country towns. As we approached Young (population roughly 7000) it had been raining, although, the weather had been fine, for a day or so. On the road were literally dozens of Australian native tortoises. These creatures are considerably smaller than your turtle; with a shell length of about 25 cm (or so). I recall stopping the car three or four times, to pick these little fellas up, and place them safely in paddocks on the other side of the road. Hope you are well.

Ty LCBR - I'm glad you picked the tortoises up and moved them.

However, the Turtle that was in the road on Monday was huge and would have weighed a lot - probably 35 lbs or more. Several people were watching but I don't think anyone dared touch him as I think he was a Snapping Turtle and they can hurt you really bad.

Thanks for sharing and for reading.

P.S. I hadn't written anything lately because nothing has inspired - leave it to a Turtle - go figure! lol

Kathy ~ It was wonderful seeing 'a friendly face & a familiar pen'.

I loved reading about the amazing turtle.

Many years ago when my animal loving son was attending SUNY Potsdam ~ he got out of his car and stopped traffic so that a duck and her ducklings could cross the road safely.

Hope all is well, and thank you for sharing.

Thank you South Miami. The turtle was about that size but the picture is not quite the same - this is a picture I got off the Internet. Not sure exactly what kind of turtle it was but was told chances are he was a snapping turtle. Take care. Wish Cafe would return. Has anyone heard from him?

Hi Christian - that is not an actual picture of the turtle I saw - but I think he was similar. As for the claw feet - I looked for one with like clubbed feet like an elephant - couldn't find a picture of that - I that his feet were more rounded - not sure - but he sure had thick legs! And he was BIG!! A friend told me from church that it probably was a Snapping Turtle. Not sure we have Alligator ones in New York State. Thanks for reading my friend!
