I appreciate this poem. It is direct and to the point. My favorite two lines "it is they that hold/the sovereignty of the night."
Beautiful sentiments, though I am beginning to enjoy the single life more everyday because I know so many married couples who are unhappy and just existing in relationships out of economic necessity or the fear of being alone. I believe it takes a certain amount of courage to avoid compromising one's self-respect just to avoid the poverty of loneliness.

Hi neighbour.......I do understand, and often I remember....but there are also down sides, so what I think is important is being with someone who can share some things, but not everything, because we should never give up what makes us unique, to make us into a couple.......because the old saying is true, better no relationship than a bad one.....but being too independent, can also be our downfall.........great poem....make one think, and that's good.....Kathy

Thanks Black Unicorn and Kathy
Bitter sweet I think.
But yes Singles own the day at least, too much solace becomes soul-less

Couples sleep sound while some of us singles hardly sleep at all.
Very descriptive poem. Thanks for sharing.
Just a little side note: I live in Upstate New York a long ways from New York City. I have been there a couple of times and would rather stay in God's beautiful upstate nature then the noise and pollution in the city. Unfortunately when I was in school and our band went to play at the 1964 World's Fair, our buses got lost leaving the city and we were treated to an extensive tour of the slums of New York City - not the beautiful city you were describing. Not to mention I've been on the Long Island Expressway with my Uncle driving - DO NOT - I REPEAT - DO NOT GET BEHIND A FUNERAL PROCESSION if you can help it!
