The Value of Pie

That was not a pie you gave me yesterday.
Call it shepherd’s or even cottage if you must.
But it wasn’t a pie, no matter what you say,
when the damned thing didn’t even have a crust.

And though my judgement might sound somewhat hasty,
I do not think I'm asking for a lot,
when I insist the filling be encased in pastry,
and yesterday it certainly was not!

A pie without a crusty pastry case
reminds me of a tortoise without its shell.
Its omission is an absolute disgrace.
I’m sure the tortoise would agree, as well.

So next time please do not dissatisfy,
just put a bloody crust around my pie!

Pie isn't pie without a crust. I've heard of Shepherd's pie but not sure exactly what it's made of. For me pie is dessert with fruit or pudding in it. There is pecan pie which is a nut but that's not my cup of tea! I'm with you on the crust.

Kathy pizza Of course there is always a pizza pie! Tomato, cheese and crust! Yum!laugh

Oh, now we are compelled to think about a tortoise happily walking under the umbrella of its shell whenever baking a crusty pie!

Agree with you abut the crust, good laugh as always, hope the menu continues to run.

A pie is quite a definite thing in Britain, princess. It has to have a pastry case and a lid. That's my opinion, anyway. snooty

I hope your pies aren't quite as crusty as tortoiseshell, yaspark.

A tortoiseshell crust would be tooth-breaking, is meringe acceptable for you?
Harbal
I wouldn't normally accept meringue as a substitute for pie crust, yaspark, but as it's you I'm going to make an exception.

Not only meringue but whipped cream too! Yum! Chocolate, strawberry or butterscotch with whipped cream! Yum!! Apple definitely has to have a top crust. My Mom always made apple pie with nutmeg - no cinnamon. To this day my one brother and I won't eat apple pie with cinnamon - just nutmeg. Her recipe for strawberry shortcake was a biscuit with strawberries on. Then in place of whipped cream (too expensive when we were kids) she filled a glass with milk - put in vanilla, a little sugar and nutmeg - stirred it up and we poured it over the biscuit and strawberry! Yum!! Getting off track here. Memories.

I like nutmeg, princess, I used to sprinkle it on vanilla ice cream and anything else that I thought it might go with. Like you, I'm not keen on cinnamon.

Harbal, cheering wine what a sonnet you wrote there. I agree, the tortoise would raise hell if he is caught without a shell.

And so does your pie, without its crust, wouldn't qualify
To be called a......pie.cheers
