In a lifetime soon closing

perhaps one or two, a handful
may have loved me.
Enough, isn't it
but such loves can pass.

The very first lost love
hurt most and ached
so long tears fell always
her name remembered her face faded,

as of course has mine
skin wrinkled and sagging now.
Younger, love was essential
and mornings I would awake

Wondering 'I love - whom?'
Yet now no answer and it seems
as though I no longer care
but it's not true - I still do.
