Falling

The bottom dropped out from my being.
it fell through the heavens,
cast down from your paradise.
it fell and drowned in shallow pools of tears,
sinking, as though tied to lead weights.
it fell upon a barren field of dust,
where fire burned, and scorched it to ashes.
it fell upon the frost of a winters night,
shivering, cold, and so alone.
it fell into my lap where I picked it up,
and cradled the pieces in my trembling arms.
my poor, shattered heart.
