Raucous screeches late in the evening

Raucous screeches late in the evening
Territorial disputes amongst
the kookaburras I suspect.
It's late and quite dark
Later than the regular call
Two pairs I think have come face to face
on a common corner and both protest
Loudly harshly and wonderfully Australian

Ah, my mistake!
Nine pm seems to be
the designated time for the laugh
of the kookaburra couple
on their evening rounds
here in my neck of the woods.
But order has been restored,
As there were just two cacklers last night.
