still thinking of you

Did you and I once walk this way?
In a bygone year on a different day
Were we happy, or upset?
With piece of mind or under threat

I remember the sun as it danced in your hair
And how I felt being part of a pair
I think that I took your photograph
The pose you struck made us both laugh

Did we sit on a bench? As I’m doing now
Sharing our thoughts in a mutual row
Or like proper lovers did we simply just kiss?
Why, only now, am I thinking of this?

Could the stones and the sea hear how we related?
Do they understand why we separated?
How do I tell without making a sound?
Maybe that’s why I’m writing it down

Somehow I always come back to this place
It calls my name and remembers my face
It’s itching to ask where you are gone
What lonely bench you’re sitting on

I hope you have found the love you deserve
Someone with prospects, someone with nerve
I hope you don’t come here, but if you do
I hope the sea whispers, “I’m still thinking of you”
