sea horse

there are horses
no one ever rides
who have no mane
no neigh no cantor
feels no saddle
feels no bridle bit
is free and yet
is seldom seen
instead she rides
instead she glides
across the ocean deep
where she runs her course
the little little sea horse

Found some info on them:

Seahorses are truly unique. Unlike most fish, they are monogamous and mate for life. They are among the only animal species on Earth in which the male bears the unborn young, equipped with a brood pouch on their front-facing side. The female deposits her eggs into his pouch, and the male fertilizes them internally. He carries the eggs in his pouch until they hatch, then releases fully formed, miniature seahorses into the water.

Because of their body shape, seahorses are rather inept swimmers and can easily die of exhaustion when caught in storm-roiled seas.

I loved your poem and the way you described the freedom of the sea horse. I have always thought of them as such mystical creatures. I guess because they are so rare, at least I have not seen many in my life time dunno
Ever since I was a very tiny girl, sea horses have left me awe, and a hard carboard book was my favourite, and may have been the water babies, but it had sea horses, so it was well cared for but well used....Thanks you for the poem, it brought back sweet memories...Niahwow teddybear

Very nice write Serpico and Scatlyn I'm still reeling
from the idea of the male bearing the little colts and fillies.
Very educational.....very traumatic...didn't the governor of
California do a movie about this......doh frustrated

dont know about the movie...maybe scatlyn will pick that up if she views this again..cheers..
lovely poem serpico....these tiny creatures do spark wonder...and you never know where you might learn something truly memorable.thumbs up
hi jazzy ..and thanks for viewing..yes true i did nt know aspects of the sea horse either..seems you learn something new each day..
Hi, serpico12,
Thanks for bringing the seahorse to light. I was feeling all wistful over the fact that the seahorse mates for life until I read that their lifespan is only one to three or five years, depending on the source. It puts the human lifespan and fidelity rate into some type of perspective. (But, having once had a salt-water aquarium, I was sad to read that I was on the seahorse's biggest-predator list.)
hi gn and thanks for commenting again on the poem..well scatlyn read the poem and did some research it would its down to her..good research job...yes..short life for the sea horses..wonder why really..
Hi Serpico,
Thank you for the reply!(I think I get too much credit there laugh, but thanks!)
Here's a little more info:
Seahorses live exclusively in saltwater & can be found in most of the oceans. They prefer shallow, tropical, temperate waters close to the coast line. Large seahorse populations are found close to the equator. Due to the fact that they are poor swimmers & can easily die from exhaustion, they live in calm, sheltered areas such as coral reefs, sea grass beds & mangroves.

Herds of seahorses have been found in the oceans near southern North America and northern South America. They also live in the oceans around Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Southern Asia and also exist in all of the Mediterranean seas.

And as was mentioned, they live from 1 - 5 years. Not sure why, but it seems they're pretty fragile. They have to eat almost non-stop to survive b/c their digestive system works so quickly.

--Once again, love the poem! (And it's been really interesting learning more about seahorses)

Well, boyshcharm... professor if a woman can do it... rolling on the floor laughing

Then again, I didn't see the movie, but if Schwarzenneger had trouble, with all his bodybuilding championships... I guess it could be traumatic to think about!!laugh
Poetry can be fun, educational, mysterious, serious, silly and quite sobering at times.... yet.. it's the WRITERS that make it happen!!! Here's 3 cheers for poets around the world!!! cheers cheers cheers
