Had EU failed? Millions unemployed in spain n Greece.. Spain used to be so cheap. and look at it now.. I think EU has failed , how about u?
What I personally think is Orwell had it close to the mark when he wrote animal farm and the PIGS controlling things (for a while at least..)
P....Porgual I....Ireland G....Greece S....Spain
I think it's only a matter of time before Greece default...Spain will ask for a bail out. And Portugal will default too...
If Enda Kenny did a Putain and tore up the contracts to the oil & gas companies and put a new deal on the table, the Irish debt would be wiped out in one stroke...and The Celtic tiger would be back.....Ireland has enough oil & gas to pay for itself....But the Gov. doesn't have the balls...

The European Comission and the Euro are absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with economics. If it was it would never have been born at all. What it is about is a grandiose socialist dream to bring everyone in Europe to the same pathetic low level., and be controlled by a 27 member unelected politburo in Brussels.
The countries in difficulty have a simple answer which will free them from the poliical stranglehold of the stupid 'one size fits all' Euro. Simply , they should pull out, they can then revert to their former currency which will float as the market determines, and they can set their own interest rates again, and become free to control their own economic destiny. Even in a small sized country such as the UK, various areas could do with differing interest rates i.e. London and the south east is very prosperous wheras the north is not. I await cries from people whom allege - with very short memories that it is the EU that has ensured 'peace in Europe' What a joke - clearly they have forgotten what happened in 1914, and in 1939, and that largely 'peace in Europe', has been maintained by the US (NATO). The idea that somehow France and Germany are responsible is laughable.
One last point, every family in the UK pays over £900 EACH PER YEAR TO BE IN THIS CLUB, AND MOST OF THEM WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT EXACTLY DO THEY GET FOR THAT - ANSWER VERY LITTLE. If a referendum on the UK's membership were taken today it is likely that well over 50% would gladly vote to pull out, and that% increases year by year. Of course our sycophantic, spineless politicians will never give the people what they actually want.

I understand you have reasons to feel so strongly about this issue.
For me the alternative to a united Europe would be a divided one, with everything implied by the revival of previous rivalries, suspicion, nationalism or post-napoleonic obsessions.
The question is not if we want Europe but what kind of a Europe we want and that is why, in my opinion, a black and white approach can only have a limited contribution.
I would rather discuss about probable practical solutions, rather than aphorisms.

A what????????????I'm an original thick mick (keep it simple)
Stylian: The starting point was different in each case, and even as many people are led to the tempting conclusion to assume that there is one and only reason for this mess in the EU, and this reason is simply the EU.
...
Greece cooked the books to gain entry into the EU...Ireland took one for the team by letting the bond holders pork them...Spain and Portugal tried to keep up with Jones...
Thats why the EU is in this mess...Italy and France aren't that far behind either...The UK prob. wont sink and Everyone is owned by Germany....

So what is your problem with that? I mean being owned by Germany could not be that bad. Their beer isn't that bad...
Anyway, based on your argumentation, one should also dissolve the UN just because the US and the UK lied about Sadam's weapons of mass destruction. Fine. And then?
It´s a great pity though. The idea of a united Europe was something I had great faith in, but it doesn´t seem to be paying the dividends I´d hoped for.
I will still support it, in spite of the doom and gloom clearly demonstrated on this thread.

I'm not complaining about being owned by Germany (didn't mean to come across that way)...As for the UN...They're a complete comedy of errors...On a Shakespearian level...

What about saying congrats on the pic. of liverpool thread..(I suspose hell would have to frezze over first..)
I'm kinda with Jan..the concept is good..but it's totaly un workable today..language, tax, nationalism...(too much of a head ache)..
Keep it simple and trade with one another, keep the euro...Myself for example, I'll never call myself European..I'm Irish..I live in Europe...I wont salute another flag. I respect the law of the land I'm in...but nothing else....
I'd go back (like I said keeping the Euro) to pre Mastricht...

Interesting... and how do you imagine this could work?
Stylian: That is not EU. This is Europe of the 1930s and before
And it worked....and we don't have to go back to pre 1930...basically if it aint broke don't fix it... Personally I think a modern U.S.E could probably work..but unfortunatly it's very badly thought out, by an unelected few..
