A message doesn’t have to suggest interest? – Haven’t understood this one: if I answer that I’m not interested, then the message is clear. If I answer with a proper letter without mentioning interest, it means that I’m interested.

I generally respond to every flower or letter except obvious scams.
But I don't feel obliged to do so in every case and I don't necessarily expect an answer to messages I send.
Especially if I don't already know the person from the forums.
I never use IMs. I keep it turned off.
It's too invasive in my opinion.
As for the people who look at my profile I don't even check.
There are many reasons someone might look at a profile besides romantic interest. You might be on somebody's hit list for example.

Not sure I agree this site is all about dating... have received the oddest messages here where people book date and time for a date without even introducing themselves... do I feel obliged to answer them? not really..

Three times I’ve taken initiative and sent messages first, and none of them was answered. Did I expect an answer? Yes, I did, otherwise I wouldn’t send them.
I send “Happy New Year!” flowers every New Year to them who haven’t behaved
(ie to people I like), and most of them are answered, though in this case I don’t expect it, but it’s pleasant nonetheless. 
Note to self: Include Mazza1980 in the coming New Year list, or else he’d die of thirst.

Often, when I participate in or read through a discussion on the forums I check people's profile to find out a little bit about them. I assume it was something like that. I don't remember the specific occasion.

No you don´t have to spell anything out. Your thread did not specifically request responses from only people interested in dating. You asked a general, open question, and we have responded accordingly as far as I can see.
Some of us may have joined initially with the expectation of dating, and I for one have had several CS dates in the past, and receive mail which I often do not respond to, so I felt it was appropriate to post here.
